Making Your Septic System Last!

Today septic system technology is greatly improving and I believe that we have found out more about septic systems in the last 5 years than we have in the previous 40 years.  EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) concluded in its 1997 Report to Congress that "an adequately managed decentralized wastewater (septic) systems are a cost-effective and long-term option for meeting public health and water quality goals, particularly in less densely populated areas where public systems are not available"

After a natural disaster, septic systems may be damaged and fail to operate correctly. Ensuring that these systems function properly is essential to providing safe waste disposal for millions of Americans, yet there may be no standard safety protocol in place for using septic systems after a disaster occurs. There is a toolkit from the National Environmental Health Association provides guidance documents for different types of disasters (hurricanes/flooding, wildfires, earthquakes, snow/ice/freezing temperatures, and power outages).

Typically if a septic system is:

  • The septic system is tested properly,
  • The septic system is designed adequately,
  • The septic system is installed properly,
  • The septic system is used properly and,
  • The septic system is maintained properly,

The septic system should last indefinitely if the system is tested,

designed, installed, used and maintained properly! Click the link below to learn how to prolong the life of your septic system.
